your disc must be dvd+r and when you burn it you have to set it to dvd+r.

Use either type of disk as long as your burner can handle it.
In addition to the reply above about making sure your DVD was burned in DVD format, there are some older DVD players that just won’t work on a burned disk. They are happy only with original, pressed DVDs. Not much to do about that, but newer players should be happy with a burned disk.

Gotta check which burned media your set top player can read. Try both +r and -r, but some older machines simply have trouble with burned media.
