HP will reportedly announce restructuring plan next week, up to 30,000 job cuts

It looks like HP could be in store for another wave of big changes. According to a pair of reports out today (backing up a report from Business Insider yesterday), HP CEO Meg Whitman will announce a new restructuring plan on the company’s earnings call next Wednesday — a plan that will entail some significant job cuts. Bloomberg pegs those cuts in the neighborhood of 25,000, while All Things D says they could include as many as 30,000 jobs, noting also that the number is still a “moving target.” To put that in perspective, the company currently employs some 320,000 people worldwide. Of those cuts, 10 to 15,000 are said to come from HP’s enterprise services group, and the company is also said to be offering early retirement packages to some 5,000 employees. That restructuring plan will apparently include more than just job cuts, though, with Whitman said to be pushing a “cut and reinvest” approach that will apply across the company, according to ATD.

Mozilla publishes name and shame list of slow Firefox add-ons, cracks down on tardy devs

Firefox slow-addons list

Mozilla, continuing its year-long crusade to speed up Firefox startup and shutdown times, has published a name and shame list of the Firefox’s slowest add-ons.

The list is just one part of Mozilla’s new efforts to highlight slow add-ons, and to help developers make their add-ons more efficient. Over the next two weeks, ‘slow performance warnings’ will be introduced in the add-on gallery so that users can see, before installation, which add-ons will slow down their browser. If that isn’t enough to spur developers into cleaning up their add-ons, Mozilla has also begun reaching out to developers of slow add-ons with tips on how to improve add-on performance. Finally, add-on developers will soon have the ability to perform ‘on-demand performance testing,’ so that they can test their add-on before it’s deployed publicly.

Mozilla reports that the average Firefox add-on slows down Firefox’s start-up time by 10% — which means, if you install 10 add-ons, you will double your start-up time. On fast desktop PCs that kind of slowdown might be negligible, but on older computers, laptops and smartphones, it could be the difference between a 5 and 10 second startup. Mozilla has obviously realized that while massive performance gains might’ve been made with Firefox 4, the addition of third-party add-ons can destroy any user-perceived improvements.

In other news, Mozilla says that a future build of Firefox will block the installation of add-ons (such as toolbars) by third-party software. Add-ons and toolbars that are bundled in this way will require explicit approval when you next open up Firefox. Hooray!

Sprint CEO says they’ll make money on the iPhone… in 2015

During their annual shareholders meeting, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said they’re very happy with the iPhone, but admitted that it won’t be profitable for the company until 2015. Sounds crazy, but Hesse says they’re taking the long view, since offering the iPhone will stem the exodus of users going to other carriers just to get their hands on Apple’s smartphone.

General Motors saves Vauxhall factory at Ellesmere Port

Feared closure averted as GM announces that next Astra car model will be built at Merseyside and Polish plants

The Vauxhall car plant at Ellesmere Port has been saved from closure, preserving 2,100 jobs and creating hundreds more, after workers accepted a deal that will see the next-generation Astra car built at the factory.

The business secretary, Vince Cable, is visiting the plant on Thursday to mark an agreement that, in a rare reversal of industrial fortune, could lead to the closure of a sister plant in Germany.

The European arm of General Motors, Opel/Vauxhall, will split production of the new Astra model between the Merseyside site and a plant in Gliwice, Poland; with Opel’s factory in Bochum, Germany, likely to lose out as a consequence.

Ellesmere Port and Bochum had been singled out by GM executives as the plants most likely to close, triggering frantic lobbying by British politicians and trade union officials that appears to have paid off. GM is attempting to cut losses at its European operations that reached $747m (£470m) last year.

Workers at the plant voted by 94% in favour of new pay and conditions under the deal, clearing the way for the investment to go ahead.

Cable told the Guardian the government had serious concerns over the future of Ellesmere Port earlier this year. “At the beginning,” he said, “we were very concerned because it was clear that GM were committed to substantial downsizing in Europe. But we thought that this was one of the most productive plants and it was not being fully utilised. We had a good story to tell about the British car industry.” Cable said the plant had been saved by a “team UK effort” that included officials at the Unite trade union, led by former general secretary Tony Woodley.

Asked about the Bochum plant, Cable said: “I don’t want to be triumphalist but the fact that they have chosen to commit to the UK rather than the German plants is a significant statement in a way.

“But rather than dance up and down on Germany I would prefer to leave it as a positive story for us.”

Welcoming the news, David Cameron said: “This is excellent news for Ellesmere Port and for UK manufacturing. Once again we have seen the success of the UK automotive industry and the crucial role it plays in growing and rebalancing our economy.

“This has been a real team effort with the government, the company, unions and workers all focused on keeping production in the UK.”

The government is expected to support the expansion of Ellesmere Port through supply chain and apprenticeship initiatives.

Unite’s current general secretary, Len McCluskey, said the plant’s future had been guaranteed into the next decade.

“This is extremely good news for Ellesmere Port. The company has made an offer to the workforce, which our members have accepted.

“From a position of uncertainty earlier this year, there is now a potential for a future at the plant until 2020 and beyond, and with that, 700 new skilled jobs at Ellesmere Port itself, and possibly hundreds more in the supply chain.”

The site is 50 years old this year and employs 2,100 workers, plus a further 700 suppliers on the site. The directly employed staff have accepted a new labour agreement that includes a pay deal. Woodley played a key role in negotiating the deal, which will see Ellesmere Port ratchet up to a 24-hour production cycle, from two daily shifts to three.

GM is not the only carmaker scrutinising its European operations. Analysts believe the industry in Europe is more than 1m units over capacity ? the equivalent of five factories too many. GM owns seven plants in Europe, including a van factory in Luton, which is not under immediate threat. Ellesmere Port builds the Astra Sports Tourer, making 140,000 models last year. The plant was built in 1962, producing its first car, a Viva, two years later.

The doubts over Ellesmere Port’s future have been the only cloud over a UK car manufacturing industry that is enjoying a renaissance from the post-crash lows of 2008-09. The UK made about 1.35m cars last year, an increase of around 6% on 2010. A large contributor to the boom is demand in emerging markets for premium cars, such as Minis, Land Rovers and Bentleys ? all made in the UK.

However, the mass-produced market has been suffering across Europe and Ellesmere Port has been caught by that crisis. Nonetheless, other mass producers based in the UK, such as the Japanese trio of Honda, Toyota and Nissan ? the biggest car producer in the UK, have boosted their British production plans in recent months.

Code Clues Reheat Google Tablet Rumors

Murmurs about Google’s supposed plans to launch its own tablet soon are growing to a roar. Source code from Google and Samsung indicate that a Nexus tablet is in the works, Slashgear reported. “It seems logical that it will be a Google Nexus device consistent with the Nexus smartphone, but the problem is there’s nothing unique about the Nexus smartphone,” suggested Andrew Eisner, director of community and content at Retrevo.

Samsung ships QF20 camcorder with WiFi, toughened-up W300 pocket cam

Image

Samsung’s CES blitz included a tease of five new camcorders, but precious little in the way of launch details. Some of the mystery has ended, as two of the camcorders — the QF20 and W300 — are at last hitting US stores. The QF20 caters to the Internet crowd and, for $350, will let you upload your 20x-zoomed 1080p videos straight to Facebook, Picasa or YouTube without thrusting a computer into the process. If you’re more concerned about your camera surviving a rafting trip than producing viral videos, the W300 will give you dustproofing, 15-foot waterproofing and 6-foot shockproofing in a pocketable form for a more frugal $160. We’re still waiting on launches for the camcorders’ closely-related F80, Q20 and W350 (pictured) cousins, but for now you can catch full details of the QF20 and W300 after the break.
